Advertising software maker BrightTag Inc. has landed a $27 million investment from one of its biggest customers, Yahoo Japan.

The deal will allow BrightTag to more than double its staff, bringing another 100 jobs downtown, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in announcing the investment early today. This latest funding also more than doubles the total investment in the four-year-old company to $50 million.

It’s one of several recent venture investments in Chicago companies to top $10 million, including Cleversafe Inc., which raised $55 million; SMS Assist, which brought in $45 million, and Belly Inc., which landed $12 million.

BrightTag’s technology is used by website owners to manage tags, or bits of software from advertisers, ad-placement networks and others that collect data on visitors to their sites. Customers include Chicago companies such as Orbitz Worldwide Inc., Allstate Corp., Crate & Barrel and DeVry Education Group, as well as Gap Inc., JetBlue Airways and Macy’s.
